Find out more about our plans for the west midlands
irgin Radio, the UK’s most successful rock radio station, wants to launch a brand new rock station especially for the West Midlands. SMG plc, owners of Virgin Radio will be applying to the Radio Authority to run the new station when the new West Midlands regional licence is advertised early in 2003.
Virgin Radio West Midlands would be heard in an area from Telford in the Northwest across to Rugby in the Southeast, including Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Coventry, Walsall, Tamworth, Kidderminster, Nuneaton, Stratford Upon Avon and Burton Upon Trent.
Anything rocky! A mix of great contemporary artists like Red Hot Chili Peppers and Nickelback, together with classic rock from giants such as Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin. We will make a point of featuring new material and will have special slots for music from unsigned, local talent.
Yes. We’re committing at least 42 hours a week -25% of total output -to specialist shows in the evenings and weekends. Heavy metal, nu-metal, lo-fi, and indie shows are all planned and we’ll be constantly updating the schedule to reflect changing tastes.
We want to feature up and coming talent from around the West Midlands and broadcast exclusive sessions from established bands visiting the area. Virgin Radio West Midlands plans to build a state of the art studio for recording bands.
Certainly not. Virgin Radio West Midlands will have a dedicated news service supplying regional stories alongside national and international news. We will also broadcast a whole raft of local information such as travel, gig guides, music news etc.
Virgin Radio West Midlands will be a completely separate station, broadcasting 24 hours a day from studios in the West Midlands. Some of the music will be similar to the national station, but all the programmes will be specially tailored for the West Midlands.
To make sure we get the sound of Virgin Radio West Midlands finely tuned into the taste of rock fans in the region, we are currently undertaking extensive research right now. We are also switching on a short-term trial broadcast in Wolverhampton to gauge reaction to what we’re proposing – which is what this site is for.
